You will need to earn the trust of an untamed chinchilla before you should try to handle it. This will take a lot of patience and could take a lot of time as well. If your untamed chinchilla escapes, DO NOT chase after it. Try putting the dust bath, a large cardboard tube or box on the floor to help "trap" the chin when it comes to explore. If you frighten it, it will remember for a long time and make it even harder for you to earn its trust.
Once you have gained the trust of your new family member, you need to know how to properly handle it. Hold it gently but firmly by the base of the tail with one hand while supporting its weight with the other hand. Use your body to rest it against you as opposed to holding it away from your body. This will make your chin feel safer. Never hold the animal too tightly and never grab or squeeze the rib cage. You can easily break a bone or puncture vital organs without realizing it. HOME |
